Simple Little Bookmark

Be Strong, Be Brave, Be Fearless

Hello Lovely Creatives!!

Earlier this week I shared via social media that Brian came home with mixed media bookmark orders from his friends.  He informed me that after they saw his handmade bookmark we made in church last year, they told him they liked it so he offered to make each of them one.  I thought it was cute that he came home with a list of their names and the colors they wanted.
As I mentioned in my post  I'm super proud of Brian for his generosity and for being proud enough of the art we create together to share with his friends.

Here are some pics of our process in making the bookmarks.

Brian drying the 1st layer of gesso.  We used the back panel of a cereal box as
the base, makes for a durable bookmark.
Here he is decoupaging some tissue paper, text pages and decorative paper

2nd layer of gesso and starting to add some paint

Another thin layer of gesso and it time for some washi tape

A 4th and final thin layer of gesso, then paint, some paint splatter and stamped circles
Finally we printed out the sentiment and Brian decoupaged to the bookmark

The original bookmark had Psalms 23:1 on the front and the rest of the chapter on the back.  I had to explain to Brian because he goes to a public school he cannot give them cards with a bible verse.  So I asked Brian to think about what else we can put on the front of the bookmarks.   He said he just wanted some positive words like be brave or be kind.  Oh, my boy is so sweet.
As you can see in the image below he went with Be Brave, Be Strong and Be Fearless.  Which is essentially Joshua 1:9 (...be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid...).

I don't know what Brian's little friends and their families are going through in life, but may God glorify himself through this act of sharing a simple bookmark with friends.  May his friends be encouraged and blessed regardless of how they believe or don't believe, but may this impact them in a way that they may feel God's love.

Well I hope you enjoyed your visit to my page, and may your weekend be full of happiness and fun.

Many Blessings,
Carmen

TGIFrida Kahlo!

#stayfocused #createdaily #fridakahlo

Hello Creative People!

Hope you are all well on this awesome Friday!!

Well I am happy that I finally had some time to work in one of the travel art journals I received in the mail a few weeks ago.   The theme for this journal is "Frida."
I googled images of her and I took inspiration from a photo of her in a blue dress.  I know I had to make sure to captured the breaded hair, flowers or bows on her head and of course the unibrow.

Here are some process pics...

And here is the finished page...

This was my first "Frida" portrait and I know it will not be my last! I really enjoy doing my research and learning more about her.  I mean, I do remember learning about her as a fine art student way back when, but the details  I can recall are general.
I knew she was married to artist Diego Rivera, but didn't know that they got divorced and then remarried.  I knew she had physical limitations, but the fact is that she had polio as a child and at the age of 18 she was in a horrible vehicular accident, those details were not in my memory bank. During her recovery she began painting.
I figured out I knew so little about her. I think I spent more time reading about her than I did painting a version of her.

Well now it's time for this little "Frida" take a trip to Australia, then she will travel to New Zealand, before she makes her way back to her new home in California!
May she travel safe and make it to each destination in one piece!

Thank you very much for taking time to visit my blog, hope to see you again soon.

Blessings,
Carmen

What's on your workdesk? Wednesday #9

#WOYWW #stayfocused #createdaily #ATCswaps

Greetings Happy Creative People!

Yes, it's Wednesday and it's that time again to share what's on my workdesk.  To be honest, I haven't really created anything since my last post (my hubby's on vaca and we've been having a lot of family time).  I do however have a lot of backed up swaps that need to get mailed.
Most of my swaps are for ATCs (artist trading cards).  As I have mentioned in other posts, I am part of several art swap groups.  It is fun and quite addicting because receiving art in the mail is like having Christmas morning at my mailbox! I get super excited and feel so special.  I even do a little dance every time, and I don't care if my neighbors think I'm crazy.
I would love to share exactly what I created with your but I don't want my swap partners to see the ATC prior to receiving them.  Since I like to be surprised to see my swap partner's take on the theme, I'm thinking they feel the same.
So the following are photos of the cards at some point in the creation process:

I always have fun creating ATCs and just as much fun going though all my craft stuff so I can include extra goodies in the envelope I send.
Here are some if the goodies I'm sending:

I hope the ladies that receive this like the ATC I made for them and enjoy the extras I added.

Thank you very much for visiting my page and hope to see you again soon!

What's on your workdesk? Wednesday #8

#WOYWW #stayfocused #createdaily

Happy Wednesday Beautiful People!

I know its been a while, but I'm here, I'm alive, and surviving summer vacation with my bubbas!
Anyway, I was trilled to receive some mail art this week.  I believe these are the last three before I receive mine back.
These journals have been traveling for almost a year, if I'm not mistaken, we started in Sept 2015.

It's always so exciting to see everyone's interpretation of the different themes.  It truly gets me in the mood to create.
I already started sketching in the journal of the woman who started this group, Miss Martha of Ayala Art.   Martha's theme is "Frida".  I've been an artist for many years and this is my first Frida, I'm super excited and hope I do her justice!

Here is my start...
Oh and as I was searching inspiration I found out that today, July 6th, would have been her 109th birthday!! How awesome is that... Felicidades Frida!

Well this is all for now... as always I regularly share my art via social media, so if you like, please follow along via my Instagram @csbuster, my facebook artist page, or via twitter @carmen_buster  .

Thank you very much for visiting my page and hope to see you again soon!

What's on your workdesk? Wednesday #7

#WOYWW #stayfocused #createdaily

Hola Beautiful People!

Here is a look at my creative space today.  Working on a 10x10 canvas that I started two weeks ago using the leftover scraps from another project.

Today I spent most of my time trying to figure out what I want to add to the canvas.  So I searched though my sketch book for some inspiration and decided to scan and print a these two faces.

I printed the two faces onto tissue paper.
Printing on tissue paper, in my experience, differs depending on how the paper feeds into the printer.  I taped the tissue paper onto printer paper. I used painters tape, as I know, through much trial and error, that it works best for my printer and doesn't melt or get stuck anywhere inside the printer. It's not fun unjamming paper and tape from the printer.
fed my paper via the manual feed tray, tissue side down (per printing directions on tray).  This ensures the tissue paper does not get caught on the rollers.   Again, it all depends on your printer, so know your printer before you attempt to print on tissue paper.

After printing my images, its time to decoupage the image to my background, using matte medium and a palette knife (or you can use a card or the tool of your choosing).  Because the tissue paper is so thin, just a thin coat of medium is needed, you wouldn't want your image to tear.  Then carefully smooth out any bubbles with the palette knife.

I love how it turned out.  Now all I have to do is paint my girl's face and add a sentiment.

I will be sharing my progress via social media, so if you like, please follow along via Instagram @csbuster, my facebook artist page, or via twitter @carmen_buster  .

Thank you very much for visiting my page and hope to see you again soon!

What's on your workdesk? Wednesday #6

#WOYWW #stayfocused #createdaily

Happy Wednesday!

Working on some backgrounds this morning and having fun getting my hands dirty.

I have a bunch of ATCs (artist trading cards) to work on, so I decided to get the juices flowing by playing with gesso, scraps of paper and a few stamps, oh and a box of cereal.

First a layer of gesso...

Then decoupage some pretty paper with matte medium from DecoArt Mixed Media line.

Then a little more gesso just to soften up the background ...

Now time for some Faber-Castell gelatos, straight on to the paper and smoothed out with my finger.

Finally some fun with mark makers... bubble wrap, rubber stamps, and homemade foam stamps.

Oh how I love making backgrounds, you don't have to think too much, you just do!  It's messy, with no real rhyme or reason to where you put what and the end result is always amazing!

Well thank you for visiting my page and hope to see you again soon!

What's on your work desk? Wednesday #5

#WOYWW #stayfocused #createdaily

Happy Wednesday beautiful creative people!

Here is what I've been working on today.  A little whimsy girl whose getting ready to go to Australia.

This work in progress (wip) is from a travel journal with a seasons theme.  I'm hope you all see spring!

I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the flowers, which were made with modeling paste using a Balzer Designs stencil by The Crafters Workshop (TCW225).  I'm debating on what color I should paint the flowers... Do I leave them white, paint them a bright yellow, or a combo of both.

I need to make a desicion soon as this girly is scheduled to leave on Friday.

Thank you for visiting my page and hope to see you again soon!

What's on your work desk? Wednesday 4

#WOYWW #stayfocused #createdaily

Hello lovely people!

Working on more travel journals today!! Trying to keep them moving along, I don't want the ladies to wait on me.  I mailed two last week and I know they have not made their way out to Australia yet (usually takes 2 weeks), but I need to get these journals off my desk so I can focus on other projects.

Here is my work desk when I first sat down this morning.

My goal was to finish two pages before the boys got home from school... yeah, that didn't happen!

Here is the one page I was able to finish... gotta love a mixed media bird on a branch!

I'm happy with the finished product, but I think I love making backgrounds more than completing a pages.  You can't ever go wrong blending colors and adding texture with stamps, stencils, modeling paste, etc..  Oh and getting your fingers covered in paint is an added bonus... happy messes!!

Thank you for visiting my page and hope to see you again soon!

What's on your work desk? Wednesday 3

#WOYWW #stayfocused #createdaily

Hello beautiful creatives!

Good to be back in the swing of things.  Since my last post, my parents came to visit, one of my bubbas got sick, and then I got sick, so not much happening in the art department.   Thank God my parents were here because they were quite helpful.  My dad even checked off some items from the honey-do list!
Now that everyone is healthy again, I have been able to sneak in some time to get art messy!

Over a week ago I received some happy snail mail which included three travel journals!  These journals are part of the Face in the World Facebook group lead by Ayala Art.  I love being part of the group as it's all about collaborative art.  Currently we have 11 women working on each other's 5x7 journals.  Each person can choose a theme for their journal or not, and we have two weeks to mail the journal to the next person on the list.  Of course, because life happens, that is not always the case (which is why I ended up with 3 at one time).  But that is ok because we are a group of patient and understanding women, and all the journals will eventually make their way to the original artist.

Here are some pics is my work desk... hope to mail these out by the end of the week.

fig1: theme is only use black, white, with a dash of red (work in progress); fig 2: theme was anything goes

~Sidebar:
For those of you who don't know (which is most of you), I am not a dog/pet person.  But since my last post, a cute little Australian Shepherd found her way into the Buster clan and she is trying to change my mind.

Meet S'mores... super adorable, and well behaved but #stillnotadogperson, at least not yet.

Thank you for visiting my page and hope to see you again soon!

What's on your work desk? Wednesday 2

#WOYWW #stayfocused #createdaily

Hello my lovely Creative People!

Here is my 2nd What's on your workdesk? Wednesday post.  I moved myself to the coffee table just so I have room for my color pencils and chalk pastels.  I decided to add some color to this week's faces for the 29 Faces challenge.
I haven't used the pastels in a while.  It felt good playing with the medium that made me fall in love with art way back when!  Feeling the chalk on my fingers as I glide them across the paper as I blend the colors together to achieve the perfect shade... *sigh*...

Ok, I'm back, got lost in a happy memory!  Anyway, here are some pics of a face in progress... enjoy!

What's on your workdesk? Wednesday

#WOYWW #stayfocused #createdaily

Hello Beautiful Creative People!

Here is my first What's on your workdesk? Wednesday post.  I have lots going on.  I'm working on some ATCs, collaborative traveling journal entries, and Day 2 face for 29faces.  I'm currently working in my dining room because the lighting is better no matter the time of day.  I am fortunate to have a work space an office in the front of the house but without a desk lamp (need new bulb) the lighting sucks!
Anyway...  here I am in the dining room getting a lot done, creating everyday and having fun!  Oh that rhymes, done and fun!! LOL, Ok that's enough Carmen... stop!

2016, Stay Focused: Create Something Daily

#stayfocused #createdaily #mycreativeme

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!  Can I still say that even though it is already January 15!!  Either way, hope your year is going well and you are all keeping up with the goals you have set for yourselves for 2016.

As for me I have been keeping up with my goals, at least my creative ones.  I'm trying really hard since last year I didn't hit any of my marks, I was so not FOCUSed at all, for anything.

I evaluated 2015 and decided I had too many goals, became overwhelmed and gave up.   So naturally I was disappointed in myself and know things need to change for 2016.

I decided to stay with the word FOCUS and really hold true to it this year.  Focus on God (my devotional time), focus on my family (more family fun together time), and focus on my art (let go and create more).

So, in focusing in my art, I have been creating daily.   Whether a sketch, an art journal entry, or just playing with paint with the kiddies, I'm taking time to be creative.

Here is what I've been working on this week, I think she still has some work, but I like where she is going.

I want to add the following scripture to this canvas as it goes well with my word and goals for the year:

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trust in you.
~ Isaiah 26:3

Well, here is to an amazing 2016, I hope you continue to join my in my journey!

Thank you for stopping by,
Blessings,
Carmen
