Mixed Media Monday - December 2013 Creative Dare

Five Things I Value...

It's been a while since I completed a creative dare for Mixed Media Mondays with Tracy Weinzapfel, but this month I was able to take some time and create a page with the Five things I value!   I think it only took me an hour to complete... it felt good to get it all out and not have to come back to it, or over think it.

Here are some pics of the process and the completed page.

I choose the words Trust, Unity, Empathy, Joy and of course Love!

Thank you for stopping by...

Many Blessings to you and your home!

2013 Christmas Card Swap with my Mixed Media Monday Group

Handmade Christmas Cards...

Here is my 1st attempt at mixed media Christmas cards... I think they turned out pretty good.

It took me forever to decide what to do.. too many ideas in my head.  I searched on Pintrest (which btw, I finally joined), but that didn't help because there were so many more card ideas to choose from.

So I finally just started painting some backgrounds on different types of paper (card stock and dictionary pgs), did some stenciling, some doodling and just let go!

I made these cards for a Christmas Card Swap with my Mixed Media Monday peeps!  I love being a part of this groups and super excited to participate in the card swap.

I had fun making the cards, but what was more fun than making them, was receiving the package in the mail with the Christmas cards from the ladies in Group 1 of the card swap.

Here are their lovely creations!!

Buster Boy Birthday Season!!

I love my lil Bubbas!!!

Hello Everyone!

It has been over two months since posting.  Time is just flying by we have already entered the Christmas Season (Yay!).   Can't wait to share some of what I have been working on... but first I wanted to share some of my best work (of course my hubby and God kind of helped with the creation process)

For those of you who don't know me, I have three handsome boys and all their birthdays are in the fall... hence, Buster Boy Birthday Season!  So I just wanted to share my loves with you all and how we celebrated with them!

The season started with ETHAN's birthday, my 4 yr old (Sept 22, 2009).  He is smart, funny, and a force to be reckoned with (middle child syndrome)!  We started our day at the Camden Children's Garden,  had some homemade b-day cake with presents at home and the next day at school he got to share cupcakes and goodie bags with his little friends!

Then we have my youngest JONATHAN (Nov 14, 2012), who celebrated his first year of life!! He is such a happy baby, so sweet and easy to care for!! He is my biggest baby, already wearing 18-24 mons (my other two never exceeded their age in clothes size).  He smashed a cupcake on his birthday, and he he got to celebrate with his cousins the following weekend!  Pics are super cute... see below!

BRIAN, my oldest (Nov 15, 2006), who turned 7 (going on 16)!  He is also very smart, great sense of humor, and very caring and thoughtful.  He also got to celebrate with his classmates and the next morning we went out for breakfast (his favorite meal time) and he also had a sleepover the following weekend.  Yes, Brian and Jonathan's parties were on the same weekend!  And Yes, that was exhausting!!

Here are some of the pics from each celebration... Enjoy!!

Aren't my boys cute!!

Mixed Media Monday - September Creative Dare

What is in your Home?

Mixed Media Monday with Tracy Weinzapfel's September Creative dare was to examine what you allow in your home , whether your home is the physical one you live in or yourself.  I hope to always have in my Home (both physical and spiritual) the following: God, Love, Peace, Joy, Laughter, Harmony, Trust and Forgiveness.

Below are some sketches and my final journal page.

(I think it still needs something, but needed to step away... once I figure it out, I will update)
Thanks for stopping by!

Art Journal #2...

Art Journal #2, Cover

Hello everyone!

On Wednesday I decided to take a book and turn it into an art journal.  Shhh don't tell anyone, but I rescued it from being tossed while helping clean out the storage room at work... it was outdated anyway (don't need CB pub police coming after me)!
I know I have only worked on like 8 pages on Art Journal #1, but the book was asking me to give it a make over.

I liked the way the cover turned out, but it wasn't what I was going for when I started!

Materials: Acrylics, B&W paint pens, arrow stencil (homemade from cereal box), Letter Jumble stencil (TCW DYS34254), text stamp

Work in progress...

Art Journal #1... multiple entries.

Wow, its been almost a month since I posted anything... too long if you ask me!  I have been very busy at work, so by the time I get home and do the mommy and wifey thing, I'm exhausted!!
My goal is to set some time at least once a week, but sometimes I'm just too tired to lay everything out, create, clean up and put everything away (with my Ethan, who BTW will be 4 on the 22nd of Sept, I can't leave anything out!).

Ok enough of me whining... here are some journal entries that I started, but once I got to a certain point I wasn't sure how to proceed, so I just left them along.  I do keep looking at them, I think I might leave some as is and just add some journaling, but, well, I don't know...
(a) water color crayons, doodle flower I scanned from my doodle pad and printed onto white tissue paper and decoupaged to adhere.  (b) water color crayons background with mini bricks stencil (TCW191), butterflies out of dictionary pages (can't remember what I used to color them, this was last month.  I guess I should jot down what I use somewhere).

This page I just completed Thursday evening, well actually Friday morning. I started with a collage (Map pages from National geographic), used gesso as a wash, some text stamps, model paste for the mini 4 flowers stencil (TCW327) and I printed out a sketch of myself (or a version of me) onto white tissue paper.
I hope to share more with you soon.  Thank you for stopping by!

Pray about Everything... Philippians 4:6

Art Journal #1, Page 4

Always remember there is one who you can trust, so let it go and leave it in His hands...

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.
Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.

My first Art Journal!

Art Journal #1, Cover and Page 1

Hello Everyone!  I'm super excited that I am now officially art journaling!!

I bought my first mixed media art journal a couple of weeks ago (along with a bunch of other fun art stuff!) and couldn't wait to start creating.   Well, its going to be harder than I thought to carve out time to journal... and it doesn't help that I don't have an actual crafting space or that my art supplies  are in three different places.

Anyway, I was able to take some time last week and work on the front cover.  I took inspiration from one of  Tracy Weinzapfel's Mixed Media Monday pieces and put my own spin on it (which happens to be the MMM Creative Dare for July).

Materials: 9x12 Mixed Media art pad; Gesso; molding paste; Acrylics; pg from magazine ; rubber stamp; Harlequin Stencil - Crafters Workshop - 6x6 - 474763

It felt really good to paint and get my hands dirty, very relaxing... quite therapeutic!

 ~ ~ ~

Ok so now its time to start journaling.  I was a little nervous to start page one of the journal.  I know ultimately these are just artistic reflections of my feelings, but since I know that I will be sharing some of them, I feel they need to be perfect...Yes, I know.. Carmen get over yourself and let go!!.   I will get there... someday.

The page took about two days to complete, mostly because I incorporated acrylic paint skin and it needs at least 24hrs to dry.  On Tuesday I just chose a color palette for the background, but I wasn't sure what to do next so I left it alone.   For those who know me and know I really don't like purple (don't know why I just don't) can see I am letting creativity flow if that is one of the colors for my first journal page.
Wednesday evening I couldn't sleep so I decided to just create and let go!  I got in the zone!  I didn't even notice how much time had passed by and didn't make it to bed until 4ish, needless to say I was super sleepy at work.

I really like the way it turned out...

Materials: Crayola Slick Stix; Acrylic Paint Skin circles; Fine tip and Ultra fine tip Sharpie - Black; Elmers Painters Markers; Black (4b;6b) and White Charcoal pencils; Blick Gel Medium; Mod Podge - Gloss; Bible verse printed on tissue paper

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
~ Matthew 11:28

At Mid-night I received my first birthday wish from my hubby (didn't get to read his card until morning cuz I was too tired to appreciate the lovely note I knew was waiting for me inside)
Morning came and it was a pretty calm day, got up, made me some b-day pancakes, got the kids ready went to church (oh and did read the card from the hubs, beautiful and sappy as always).
My lil bubbas sang Happy Birthday to me and we had cake in the church's hall.  Then we went out to eat (yummy!!), past by my moms, (she had a gift for!!) went home did my home work and day was done!
On Wednesday, I wake up and notice a mini balloon and card taped to the front door... my sister and bro-in-law left me a gift.  It made my day and the rest of the week!!

Mixed Media Monday Creative Dare - June

June's  Creative Dare with Tracy Weinzapfel was to create with Your Powerful Truths.   Powerful Truths are those special words that enlighten and uplift, as well as encourage and empower.   They are phrases that remind you to hope,  live, believe and Love!  You know Just a bunch of good happy feelings happening inside!

Here are the Power Truths I chose and below is the completed piece I turned in for the Dare:

“Sometimes the hardest part of the journey is believing you’re worthy of the trip.”
~Glenn Beck

"Other people's opinion of you does not have to become your reality."
~Les Brown

“Why compare yourself with others? No one in the entire world can do a better job of being you than you.”  ~Unknown

~ Materials: Acrylics, Crayola Slick Stix (yes, economic gellatos),  paint pen on an 11x14 canvas

Mixed Media Monday Creative Dare - May

Before you say anything, yes I know it is June, but in my first post I did mention I would share my May Creative Dare from Tracy Weinzaphel, A letter to My younger self.   I originally thought I would blog once a week or every two weeks, but time just flies by and June has been very busy.

So here it is... excerpts from my letter to my 20yr old self ...

My Dearest Me,

I’m writing to you to let you know that you are strong, beautiful and loved; and God has been good to you!

....As you sit there in your bedroom alone, having a pity party, singing “why me” song and, reciting “The should of, could of, would ofs” I want you to know you will get out of that depressive hole.  It will take time, and some moment will feel like you are in the deepest deep, but for the most part you will get a grip and trust in the Lord.

You will do things that will make you proud of yourself and many things that you will regret.  You will be able to let go of most traumas, but you are still dealing with some.  You will get a little bolder and  a little more out spoken.  You are still not where you would like to be but you are getting better at vocalizing your opinions and stepping out of your comfort zone.
You are strong, beautiful and loved; and God has been good to you!
...You will graduate college, by the skin of your teeth, but you will graduate.  You will find (w/o even looking) someone who loves you for you.  He will be the biggest pain in the butt, but you will love him with your core because he is also your biggest supporter and your best friend.  Together you will buy a home, and have two cars and make lots of babies.  Yes, your dream of motherhood will come true.  You will have three beautiful, smart and crazy boys… btw all natural births, by choice, what were you thinking.
You will have an even closer relationship with your family. They will be by your side helping you and guiding you.  ... You will laugh with them, cry with them, fight with them and laugh some more.  You will have many friends to cross your path, but your family will be your true friends.
You are strong, beautiful and loved; and God has been good to you!
And yes, you will find the strength, passion and drive to LIVE, DREAM, BE BOLD and CREATE!!
Loved and Blessed,

Just me starting something new... Hope you join me in this journey!

So I'm really doing this.. putting myself out there for all to see.  Starting a new chapter in my life, letting myself be bold, daring to do and say what God puts in my heart.  Hopefully I stay obedient to His word and stay in line with His will.  no pressure.. :).

Well, it's June, and for those who don't know me I was born in June.. June 9th to be exact.  So how appropriate would it be to start this new venture of blogging.  But this is not the only adventure, I've also started making time for art and it feels good.
To help me stay motivated I have signed up for a course via (free online courses in almost any subject you can think of... Love it).    I have also become part of several artist communities.  The one group that has been keeping me on my feet and has introduced me to so many new things, ideas and people is Mixed Media Mondays with Tracy Weinzapfel.

Being part of the Facebook group has been awesome!  The women in this group are open and transparent and most important give me a sense of community.  They are extremely helpful and encouraging.

The monthly Creative Dares, have been quite challenging, and have made me look inside of me (scary I know).  I was first introduced to the group in April with Aprils "Five Words" Creative Dare.  We were to identify five word that best encompass what we want to be remembered for.
It took me a while but I finally narrowed it down to: Strength, Kind, Faith, Virtue and Creative.    I think it turned out pretty good!

For May's Creative Dare we had to write a letter to our younger self.  It could be to the infant you, the child you, the teenage you or even the you of last yr.  Basically it was a time to reflect, and for me it was a time to be grateful for God's blessings in my life!
My letter to me was short, sweet and to the point, but the feelings within me as I was writing were deep and revealing.  (will share more including the letter in my next post).

Here is the finished product.  Yes, it's beautiful, I know!

I can't wait to see what challenges the June Creative Dare will bring!

Via the Mixed Media Mondays group, my eyes have been open the world of Art Journaling and mixed media art.  I have been spending hours just viewing blogs and websites full of wonderful works of art and the awesome people creating them.
My passion for Art, which has been on the side lines, is making its way to the forefront and is giving me will and purpose... getting a little obsessed, but I think that is a good thing.  Hey it's gotten me to start writing a blog and encouraging me to do what I love!

Well this is my 1st post, a little birthday gift to myself.  I hope you enjoyed it!

Be Blessed!
